The Legends about the Mid-Autumn Festival

The Mid-Autumn Festival (Chinese:  中秋节) falls on the 15th day of the 8th lunar month when the moon is believed to be the fullest and roundest. Members of the family gather together for a reunion dinner and to appreciate the moon while eating moon cakes. It is also a festival for farmers to celebrate their harvest. With more than 3,000 years of history, there are different takes on the origin of this festival. Let’s talk about the top 4 most interesting stories!

  1. There were previously 10 suns in the world, is that true?

Once upon a time, there were ten suns in the sky. The extreme heat made people’s lives very difficult, scorching many crops and people to death. The Emperor of Heaven summoned Hou Yi, a hero who was excellent at archery, to shoot down nine of the sun. Hou Yi succeeded, the weather soon recovered and many lives were saved.

An immortal admired Hou Yi and sent him the elixir of immortality. Hou Yi did not want to leave Chang E, his beloved wife, and be immortal without her, so he let Chang E to keep the elixir. But Peng Meng, one of his students, knew this secret. So on the 15th of August in the lunar calendar, when Hou Yi went hunting, Peng Meng broke into Hou Yi’s house and forced Chang E to give the elixir to him. Knowing that she could not win, she took out the elixir and swallowed it immediately. The moment she drank it, she flew out of the window and up into the sky. Chang E’s great love for her husband drew her towards the moon, which is the nearest place to the earth on the heaven.

When Hou Yi came back from hunting and learned what had happened, he was so grieved that he shouted Chang E’s name to the sky. He displayed the fruits and cakes Chang E liked in the yard and gave sacrifices to her. People soon learned about these activities, and since they also were sympathetic to Chang E, they participated in these sacrifices with Hou Yi.

  1. How can a rabbit survive on the moon?!

In the Buddhist Jataka tales, a monkey, a fox and a rabbit resolved to practice charity on the day of the full moon, believing a demonstration of great virtue would earn a great reward. When an immortal, pretending to be a beggar, begged for food, the monkey gathered fruits from the trees and the fox collected fish. The rabbit, who knew only how to gather grass, instead offered its own body, jumping into a fire the man had built.

The old man revealed himself to be Sakra (The Lord) and was moved by the rabbit’s sacrifice. He decided to make the rabbit an immortal, and hence elevated her to the moon to become an immortal jade rabbit. Ever since, the jade rabbit stayed in the Moon Palace to accompany Chang E and pounded immortal medicine for those living in the heaven.

  1. Wu Gang, the woodman.

Wu Gang the woodman wanted immortality, but he gave up lazily midway through the process. The Emperor of Heaven was furious and decided to punish him. The Emperor planted a huge cherry bay tree on the moon and told Wu Gang that if he could cut it down, he could become immortal.

Wu Gang thought this was his golden opportunity to try hard at something he was good at to gain immortality. However, he was wrong. The tree will heal itself every time Wu Gang chopped it, making the task impossible.

Therefore if you look carefully at the moon in clear nights, you can see a black shadow on it. The shadows are said to be created by the growing cherry bay.

  1. Why is everyone eating moon cakes during the Mid-Autumn Festival?

In late Yuan Dynasty (1271 – 1368 AD), people in many parts of the country could not bear the cruel rule of the government and rose in rebel. Zhu YuanZhang, founder of the Ming Dynasty (1368 – 1644 AD), united the different resistance forces and wanted to organise an uprising. However, due to the narrow search by government, it was very difficult to pass messages. The counselor  Liu BoWen later thought out the great idea of hiding notes with “up-rise on the night of August 15th” in moon cakes. He gained permission to give gifts to his friends in different resistance forces. People found the revolutionary message when they cut open the moon cakes. The uprising turned to be very successful. Since then, eating moon cakes has been a custom on Mid-Autumn Festival.

For many people, developing a deeper understanding of Hispanic culture is becoming more and more important. There is no more certain way to gain this insight than to learn to speak Spanish. Reading Latin American or Spanish newspapers and magazines will open a window into the Hispanic mind. Knowing the language will prepare you to better appreciate some of the great Hispanic modern and classic cultural contributions. From Miguel Cervantes to Gabriel Garcia Marquez, Hispanic literary contributions are monumental. From the royal portraits of Goya to the surreal depictions of Picasso, Spanish influence on the fine arts has been substantial. And let’s not ignore gastronomy! Learning Spanish can be the perfect excuse for enjoying the cuisine of Spanish speaking peoples. Burritos, tamales, paella, papusas, arroz con frijoles, ceviche, — the list goes on and on, and is a delicious indicator of the vast diversity of Hispanic culture. Is it any wonder then that more and more people want to partake of these cultural delights?

#8. There are reasons to learn language for language’s sake. While Johann Wolfgang von Goethe may have been exaggerating when he said, “he who knows no foreign language, knows nothing of his own,” it cannot be denied that by studying Spanish you will without doubt gain a better understanding of English…

“The Pullman Hotel, Spain”

While Johann Wolfgang von Goethe may have been exaggerating when he said, “he who knows no foreign language, knows nothing of his own,” it cannot be denied that by studying Spanish you will without doubt gain a better understanding of English. Spanish is what we call a “Romance” language, meaning that it is based on Latin, the language of the ancient Roman Empire. Many English words are also of Latin origin, and so when you learn vocabulary in Spanish you will simultaneously be expanding your English vocabulary. You will also find that your understanding of the deep meaning of these Latin based English words is greatly enhanced. Also, as you study the grammar of Spanish, you will notice how it is similar to English, as well as how it is different. This will raise your awareness of the grammar of your native language. Because Spanish is very nearly phonetically perfect, you can look at almost any word and immediately know exactly how to pronounce it. This characteristic makes Spanish one of the easiest languages to learn. And, when it comes to learning a third language, such as French or Italian, already knowing Spanish will be a huge advantage because these languages, too, are Romance Languages.

If you are the type of person who likes to help others, learning to speak Spanish will put you in a position where you can help both Spanish speakers who don’t speak English and English speakers who don’t speak Spanish. Now that’s what we like to call a “win-win” situation. Unfortunately, the standard of living in many Spanish speaking countries is rather low by normal Western standards. Sometimes, it is appallingly low. Without stereotyping Latin America as a poverty stricken region (in many cases that simply is not true) there are nonetheless a lot of people in serious need. Learning Spanish will prepare you for taking the next step, — actually going there and making a difference!
